"Now, perhaps more than ever, time is fundamental. In today's fast-paced environment, we have placed a premium on efficient time management -- meetings, schedules, dates, being on time, taking time, giving time, setting a clock's time, and on and on. To that end, we have developed incredibly accurate clocks to help us turn time into an extremely useful tool."

Science of Timekeeping

David W. Allan has authored over 100 papers in the field of precise time and frequency. He and his colleagues developed the Allan Variance which is at the heart of international time-keeping algorithms. He is in process of writing a college text book on time for John Wiley and Sons.

NOTE: "Unprecedented Syntonization"
It takes a good dictionary to find the word syntonization.  Synchronization means the clock times agree. Syntonization means the clock rates agree. They differ by a derivative, and unless differentiated appropriately in the vernacular, much confusion arises.  Telecom almost always uses the word "synchronization" when they mean "syntonization."

The Science of Timekeeping (cover image)

"Timekeeping has become a critical factor in almost every aspect of our lives. HP is proud to present this application note, written by three of the leading scientists in the field, which brings together the history and the science of today's hyperfine timekeeping benefits, needs, and expectations. Authored by David W. Allan, Clifford C. Hodge, and Neil Ashby, this application note promises to be a classic reference for decades to come."
